WFP gives food assistance

JAKARTA: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will provide free food assistance to 22,024 flood victims and 1,391 children in Situbondo, East Java, through its local implementing partner, Spektra.

A letter of agreement was signed by WFP representative and country director Mohamed Saleheen and Roni Sya'roni, director of Spektra, in Situbondo on Wednesday.

The assistance is aimed at providing relief aid to the flood victims who are residing in temporary shelters and with host families in three most affected villages of Panji, Panarukan and Situbondo.

WFP said in a statement that the assistance, which was for 30- day period, would consist of 220.24 tons of rice and 700 kilograms of Delvita, WFP's supplemental food for children.

Each person will be entitled to 10 kilograms of rice, while children under five years of age will receive five sachets (500 grams) of Delvita.

This is in addition to the earlier assistance provided by WFP to the flood victims in Jakarta and East Java early last month. -- JP
