Water supply from Jatiluhur

JAKARTA (JP): The most economical way of meeting Jakarta's rising demand for water over the next 10 years is to increase the amount of water taken from the Jatiluhur dam in West Java, an official said yesterday.

"The increase in water input (from the dam) can be achieved by raising the capacity of the Tarum Barat pipe network or by building a new pipeline directly from Jatiluhur," said Risyana Sukarna, head of the clean water section of the directorate of technical development.

Risyana told Antara that the water city's water supply still relies heavily on the Tarum Barat network.

He said that the supply of water from Jatiluhur will be adequate until the year 2000.

The water demand in the city is projected to increase steadily over the next few years, in line with the rising population and the rapid growth of industry, meaning that new sources are needed, he added. (hhr)
