Water supplied to Thousand Islands

JAKARTA (JP): City-owned water company PDAM Jaya is supplying 80 tons of water to residents of the Seribu (Thousand) Islands chain, North Jakarta.

The first 40 tons were distributed yesterday to Untung Jawa island, which is believed to be the hardest hit area in the water crisis. The water was transported by naval ships which also went to other islands, including Panggang, Tidung and Kelapa islands.

The other 40 tons will be delivered today.

"There is no water on the Thousand Islands. The wells are dry and people cannot use salt water because it's bad for their health," La Ode Dayan, Naval Prime Base commander said yesterday.

PDAM spokesman Godman Ambarita said his company would try its best to meet Jakartan's water demands. (07)
