Water shortage hits dairy cows

BOGOR (JP): Water shortage has threatened the life of some 2,000 dairy cows at three husbandry centers in the district of Pamijahan, Bogor, an official said on Thursday.

"The floods hitting Bogor on June 24 broke 10 large reservoirs which supplied water for the husbandry. The repair of the reservoirs has not begun," Harun Heryana, the official in charge of development at the Bogor regency, said.

The 10 reservoirs could supply water to 2,000 hectares of farm land, including the husbandry centers.

The floods damaged tens of houses and 38 reservoirs in the area.

He said that the production of milk had also dropped from 6,000 liters to 5,000 liters per day. "Or some Rp 1.2 million per day."

Bogor regent Agus Utara Effendi said he had ordered the repair of the reservoirs. Sources in the regency said a total of Rp 1.1 billion had been allotted for the project. (21/sur)
