Water level drops in dams

SEMARANG: The water level in a number of dams in Central Java has dropped due to the dry season.

The dams include the Bade and the Kedung Ombo in the Boyolali regency, and the Ketro in Sragen.

An employee at the local office of the Ministry of Public Works said the dam, which has a capacity of 2.4 cubic meters, now holds only about one million cubic meters.

"The water supply from the Serang river has dropped," said Sabar.

The dam is essential for the irrigation of 1,591 hectares of rice fields. "Usually the rice harvest here is twice a year, and the harvest of other crops once a year," Sabar said. He expressed concern that harvest might be poor this year. (anr)
