Waste disposal and welfare
From Koran Tempo
The recent riot at the waste treatment plant in Bojong, Bogor, which left several villagers hospitalized, has aroused public concern over the fate of ordinary people struggling to make a living.
The case of the Bantar Gebang garbage dump in Bekasi has not yet been resolved and now the Bojong plant is going to be opened without any communication with the local community.
The riot would not have happened if the people in the eight villages around the Bojong site had been involved in the project and informed of the waste processing system from the beginning. People living near the Bantar Gebang dump were also promised many things that they never received.
The government and the management of the Bojong plant should inform the local community of the benefits of this processing plant and the extra income it will generate for villagers.
In some Jakarta subdistricts, for instance, garbage management has created healthy environments and has increased residents income from the sale of flowers and manure.
