JAKARTA (JP): Mark Walker and Sirait won the one-day Kiwanis charity golf tournament at Pondok Indah Padang Golf & Country Club in South Jakarta on Thursday.

Walker recorded a score of 77 with a four handicap, while Sirait shot a 61 with a handicap of 21. With their victories, Walker took the Yuwono Kolopaking trophy and Sirait captured the Jakarta Governor trophy, which are contested annually.

Yuwono is one of the commissioners of the Pondok Indah Padang Golf & Country Club.

The one-day tournament was participated in by some 160 golfers, consisting of expatriates and Indonesians. The tournament, the eighth of its kind, was organized by the Kiwanis Jakarta Club.

Club president Indiarto Yuwono told The Jakarta Post on Thursday the purpose of the tournament was to put on show the highest quality golf.

"The club also wants the golfers to show their concern for the community. We have proven our concern by donating money to orphanages," Indiarto said.

Kiwanis Jakarta Club was founded seven years ago and is a member of Kiwanis International, which was established in 1915 and is headquartered in Michigan in the United States.

Kiwanis Jakarta Club currently has 30,000 members, while Kiwanis International has 400,000 members in 83 countries.

Membership in the club is US$50 as a joining fee and a monthly fee of Rp 40,000. Most new club members are friends or partners of members, Indiarto said.

Indiarto said the club raised Rp 10.98 million from the tournament, Rp 10 million of which was donated to three orphanages in Jakarta and one in Bogor.

"Last year we received a donation of $4,000 from Kiwanis Austria, which was given to 15 orphanages in Jakarta and Bogor in the form of scholarships," Indiarto said.

He also said Kiwanis Singapore donated Rp 14 million to 30 orphans last year. "This amount was also given to the children in the form of scholarships." (lnt)
