VP to open seminar on police

SEMARANG: Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri is scheduled
to open a national seminar on police at the Diponegoro
University campus here on Wednesday.

Chairman of the organizing committee Budi Wisaksono said on
Tuesday that former Philippine president Fidel Ramos would be one
of the speakers in the seminar entitled Peran Polri Sebagai
Akselerator Demokratisasi (The Role of the Police as a
Democratization Accelerator).

"The seminar will dig deep into the police's role in handling
social unrest based on legal procedures," Budi said.

The other speakers will be National Police chief Gen. Surojo
Bimantoro, law expert Prof. Satjipto Rahardjo, criminologist
Mulyana W. Kusuma, social observers Franz Magnis Suseno and Muji
Sutrisno, Antara reported. (har/sur)
