Volcanologists watch Mt. Lokon
MANADO, North Sulawesi: Volcanologists have discovered an extension of a dry spot in Mount Lokon, which is located near this provincial capital, raising fears of a possible eruption.
Antara reported on Monday that people living at the foot of the 1,689-meter volcano -- situated some 25 kilometers from the capital -- began to smell sulfur and see white smoke emerging from the crater despite the onset of the rainy season.
Head of the province's Ministry of Mines and Energy office W. Tambunan has warned the public about the increased activity of the volcano. The office has told residents to be on alert for possible explosions.
Tambunan said a monitoring team posted in Kakaskasen village near the volcano is tracking developments on the mountain, which last exploded in 1991.
Minahasa Regent Boy Tangkawarouw has declared the volcano closed for mountaineering activities.
A Swiss woman Vivian Clavel is believed to have died as a result of being trapped by lava when the volcano last erupted. Her remains are yet to be discovered.
Following the disaster, hundreds of villagers were relocated to Bolaang Mongondow regency. (amd)
