Visa cards and surcharges

In response to the Visa card and extra charge letter written by Ms. Nidia A. Brakstad on Aug. 28, I would like to clarify Visa's policy regarding the practice of surcharging by merchants.

Merchants are not supposed to impose a surcharge on any Visa card transaction, regardless of the nature of the goods or services being purchased.

In the event of a merchant insisting upon imposing a surcharge, we strongly encourage Visa cardholders to refuse the sale and shop elsewhere, to help send the message clearly to merchants that this is unacceptable.

Any Visa cardholder who is surcharged by a merchant should report the details of the transaction to the bank which has issued their personal Visa card.
