Visa Card: No surcharge
In response to the letter Unfair Visa practice from Mr. BF Doyle on Oct. 15, I would like to clarify Visa's policy regarding the practice of surcharging by merchants.
Merchants are not supposed to impose a surcharge on any Visa card transaction, regardless of the nature of the goods or services being purchased.
In the event of a merchant insisting upon imposing a surcharge, we strongly encourage Visa holders to refuse the sale and go elsewhere -- to help send the message clearly to merchants that this is unacceptable.
Any Visa card holder who is surcharged by a merchant should report the details of the transaction to the bank which has issued their personal Visa card.
We are also reminding our acquiring banks of this practice in order to reinforce the policy with their merchants.
Thank you for your kind attention.
