Violence in Maluku erupts again
AMBON, Maluku: Shooting on the waters off Cape Oum in the Central Maluku regency has triggered further clashes in nearby towns and villages leaving at least two dead and five injured, police said on Monday.
Saparua Police subprecinct chief Sr. Insp. Ronny Nusamara said the incident occurred when a passenger boat was attacked by gunmen on the waters off Cape Oum on Saparua Island, Central Maluku regency, on Monday afternoon.
"Upon arriving at the town of Masohi, the passengers and local residents retaliated," he said.
The police said that at least three people were then injured in a bigger clash that broke out in the town.
The news of the retaliation in Masohi spread to nearby Siri Sori village, where residents gathered and headed to neighboring Ulath village to avenge the previous attack. Three houses and one police post were set ablaze. (49/lup)
