Vienna symphony orchestra to perform here

JAKARTA (JP): Classical music lovers will be treated to a world-class concert by the Vienna Volksoper Symphony Orchestra here on Nov. 19, the organizing committee has announced.

Sponsored by Toyota Motor Corporation in cooperation with its local subsidiary PT Toyota-Astra Motor, the concert will take place at Shangri-La Hotel, Central Jakarta.

The Jakarta concert will be the last leg of the orchestra's Asian tour which has included concerts in Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Brunei.

The Japanese carmaker has been sponsoring classical concerts with its Asian distributors in Asian countries since 1990, with the aim of improving people's appreciation of classical music.

The Vienna Volksoper Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1978 by members of the Vienna Volksoper Theater, which was founded in 1898 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef.

It boasts a broad repertoire from baroque to contemporary music.

The conductor is Richard Edlinger, who is also the chief conductor of the United Philharmonic Vienna. Regina Renzova is the soprano and Miroslav Dvorsky the tenor.

The symphony will present a repertoire that includes works by Johann Strauss II, who died 100 years ago, along with many popular waltzes and polkas.

All the proceeds from the Jakarta concert will go to the Foundation for Indonesian Children's Welfare (YKAI), the committee said. Tickets will be available priced Rp 250,000 for S class, Rp 150,000 for A class, Rp 75,000 for B class and Rp 35,000 for b class. (pan)
