Victims' family compensated

GRESIK, East Java: State-owned social security company Jamsostek paid on Monday Rp 49.1 million in compensation to relatives of two victims killed in a recent fire on a tanker.

Fire broke out and gutted the Salawati on July 15 as it sat in the compound of the state-owned ship factory, PT PAL Surabaya.

The victims were Supaat, 44, and his son-in-law, Muhammad Saicu, 27. Both victims were residents of Jl. Sunan Giri V in Kawes Anyar village in Gresik. Supaat's wife, Islamiyah, received Rp 24.7 million in compensation for Supaat and Rp 24.4 million for Saicu.

Meanwhile, the head of the Gresik Jamsostek office, Redy, said a few companies had not registered their workers for insurance. He said that there were about 40 companies with a total of 20,000 workers that were not enrolled in the workers' insurance program.

Until June 2001, the Gresik branch office has handled 1,277 work-related incidents with total compensation reaching Rp 813.9 million, Antara reported. (emf)
