Victim of train accident dies

JAKARTA (JP): One of the 20 passengers injured in Monday's train accident died on Tuesday due to serious head wounds.

Spokesman for state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Zainal Abidin said on Wednesday that the man, Teddy Hernanda, 20, an East Jakarta resident, died at the Fatmawati Hospital.

"We are very saddened by his death. We are paying the medical bills of all train accident victims," Zainal told reporters.

A pantograph that connected the electric commuter train to the electricity cables came off on Monday as the train was heading for Bogor from Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta, forcing a group of passengers to jump out to rescue themselves.

Zainal had blamed the incident on the train being overcrowded.

The injured train passengers were admitted to Pasar Minggu Hospital and Fatmawati Hospital in South Jakarta, as well as Pasar Rebo Hospital in East Jakarta. (ylt)
