Vendors rally at mayor's office

Some 200 street vendors who were evicted from the pavement on Jl. Kiasnawi, Pasar Anyer, in a raid last Saturday staged a rally at the mayor's office on Monday morning to demand they be allowed to trade along the street.

"If we continue to trade along the street, we would be in violation of the rules. We just want to earn money to feed our families," said Rizal who led the vendors.

He said if clashes between public order officers and vendors broke out, vendors would not be to blame because they only wanted to earn a living.

If the administration were to allow vendors to operate along the street, he said, all vendors would be willing to abide by the rules and uphold public order.

Municipal public order agency chief M. Akip and Sabar Situmorang, who led the raid against vendors last Saturday, met 15 of the 200 vendors.

However, no agreement was reached between vendors and the administration because Akip insisted that the vendors to move to another location that had been provided for them. --JP
