Utut out of chess meet
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Grand Master (GM) Utut Adianto has bowed out of the Grand Prix Chess Online championship at Hotel Ibis Slipi, Central Jakarta.
Utut failed to beat GM Nigel Short of England in the final five minutes rapid chess on Sunday after both players tied 1-1 on Saturday and Sunday.
In the first round on Saturday, Utut, who has a elo rating of 2615, won against Short with his rating of 2683 in the 62nd move.
But in the second round on Sunday, Short beat Utut in the 50th move, tying the game at 1-1.
With the score tied at 1-1, the organizer decided the two players had to play a five-minute rapid chess game on Sunday to determine the winner.
At first Utut matched Short's play. But in the remaining two minutes, Utut blundered by moving his King, giving Short the advantage in which the Englishman did not give way for Utut to win the game.
With the defeat, Short collected 2.5 victory points against Utut's 1.5 VP.
Short will play against GM Peter Svidler of Russia on Monday night. (lnt)
