Utut claims second win

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Utut Adianto scored his second straight win at the Gunadharma Grandmaster Chess Tournament yesterday, beating Slovakia's Lajos Ftacnik after 39 moves.

Playing the disadvantageous black pieces, a victory-hungry Utut followed up a Reti opening with a series of attacks to the Slovakian's kingside board. It took Utut 25 moves of constant pressure to gain pieces of better quality.

The win put Utut at third place in the provisional standings with 3.5 points after six games. Michael Krasenkow of Poland joined Utut as sixth-round winner after stopping Germany's Joerg Hickl in the 24th move.

The three other matches yesterday ended in draws. (amd)
