USAID, clerics launch hygiene campaign

SURABAYA: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is involving local clerics in its campaign to promote hygienic habits launched here on Saturday.

Health Communication Coordinator Environmental Services Program (ESP) USAID Nona Poroe Utomo said the drive was expected to curb the incidence rate of diarrhea in East Java, the country's most populous province.

The program covers six towns, including Surabaya, Malang and Pasuruan. During the campaign, people will be instructed on how to properly wash their hands using soap.

Chairman of the provincial ulema council Abdusshomad Buchori admitted there were many clerics who were not accustomed to healthy lifestyle. -- JP
