Unocal gets green award

JAKARTA (JP): Oil and gas company Unocal Corporation said its subsidiary Unocal Indonesia had been awarded the government's KALPATARU environmental prize for its reforestation and rehabilitation project in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

Unocal and state oil and gas company Pertamina received the award for the Green Belt Rehabilitation Project, the company said in a press release over the week end.

The Green Belt project, it said, aimed at preventing hillside erosion drainage and beautifying several areas in and around Balikpapan.

"We are very honored to receive the award as a recognition of that commitment," Unocal vice president Robert Hinkel said of the company's commitment to improve people's live in the areas it was working.

The Green Belt project has contributed to the improvement of over 100,000 square meters of land in areas near the company's facilities in Balikpapan, the statement said.(bkm)
