University to host kickboxing c'ships

SURAKARTA, Central Java (JP): State-run Sebelas Maret University will host the Tarung Derajat (Indonesian Kickboxing) national championships in April, an event that will be attended by about 200 kickboxers.

The local Tarung Derajat patron, Isep Ruswan, said on Wednesday the championships were not only a meeting point for kickboxers from across the nation, but also would introduce the sport to youths and public figures in Surakarta.

"I hope these national championships can attract the youth and promote the sport here," he said.

Tarung Derajat was an exhibition sport at the 2000 National Games (PON) in East Java in June.

"At the 2004 PON in South Sumatra the sport will be formally featured," he said. (har)
