University opens legal aid center

JAKARTA (JP): A private university signed an agreement yesterday with the Jakarta High Court to set up a study center for legal aid and consultation.

The rector of the 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) University, H.R. Srisoemantri Martosuwignyo, said the study center aimed to give law students a chance to give the public legal aid.

"The study center is expected to help create 'ready to use' scholars," Srisoemantri said.

He said the center was needed to improve the quality of the law students in facing future changes.

The Jakarta High Court chief, Hasan Gasim Shahab, said he hoped the study center would benefit law students.

"I hope the students will apply their knowledge in court," Hasan was quoted by Antara as saying.

He said the High Court would help students acquire permits as legal representatives. (jun)
