University boys tried for drugs

BOGOR (JP): A prosecutor at Bogor District Court here demanded 10-month jail terms for two university students accused of illegally possessing and consuming several grams of marijuana.

During the hearing on Thursday, prosecutor Uri Sobari told the court that Aprianto, 20, and Luthfi, 21, students at the Bogor Pakuan University and Indonesia Business Institute respectively, were arrested by police at Aprianto's house on Jl. Pesantren in Kedunghalang, North Bogor, on Nov. 20 last year.

The two were apprehended by police along with an alleged drug dealer, named Marlon Marlaut, who brought 39 packages of marijuana to the house.

"The group had begun to smoke the pot and about 11 p.m. the police raided them," Uri said.

Marlon will be tried separately.

The judge suspended the trial until next week and order the defendants to be kept in detention.

The two students were in flagrant violation of Narcotic Law No. 22/1997, which carries the death penalty or a maximum of life imprisonment and a fine of Rp 1 billion for organized drug- related felonies, while it imposes a maximum of 15 years imprisonment and Rp 150 million in fines for individuals charged in drug cases.
