United Nations to resume work in NTT

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The United Nations was ready to resume its humanitarian work in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), a provincial official said on Tuesday.

Michael Elmguist, the coordinator of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, made the announcement in a meeting with NTT deputy governor Frans Lebu Raya on Tuesday, provincial spokesman Frans Salim said.

Elmguist told the deputy governor the UN had decided to resume operations after the UN Security Council lowered its Alert V security status on the border of NTT to Alert IV recently, Frans said.

The Alert V status was imposed in September 2000 after armed militia killed three employees of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Atambua, Belu. -- JP
