UNICEF clarifies

UNICEF wishes to correct a factual error in an article in The Jakarta Post dated April 14, concerning imported vehicles currently at the Belawan Port in Medan.

UNICEF agreed to purchase the vehicles, 14 Toyota Hiace ambulances, two Toyota Hilux pickups and one Toyota Hiace minibus, at the request of the Department of Health in Banda Aceh to be used for relief activities following the Dec. 26 tsunami.

These vehicles arrived in Belawan port in February and March. The necessary documents for clearing the vehicles from Belawan port and delivering to the Department of Health in Banda Aceh are with the relevant government authorities in accordance with the law and UNICEF's Cooperation Agreement with the government of Indonesia.
