UNHCR responds

I would like to refer to you the article in The Jakarta Post on Jan. 22, under the headline UNHCR lies: Tribe head.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has no knowledge of or connection with Mr. Mosa Foa, or of the meeting he reportedly attended in Geneva.

The Working Group on Indigenous Populations to which your article refers is a subsidiary organ of the UN Commission on Human Rights. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is known under the acronym UNHCHR and is quite distinct from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

I would thank you for correcting the incorrect information you have provided to your readers concerning UNHCR's involvement in this case.

RAYMOND HALL

Regional Representative

Jakarta

Note: Thank you for your clarification and correction. We regret the error and the misunderstanding caused.
