Undip, UNS to host sports tournaments

SEMARANG (JP): Two state universities, Diponegoro University (Undip) here and 11 Maret University (UNS) in Surakarta, will stage sports events for students across the nation.

Undip will host a national tennis championships from April 2 through April 8 with a total of Rp 15 million (US$1,550) in prize money and the Dean of the School of Economy-Sukun trophy.

"We hope that many universities which are the home bases of national tennis players, such as Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta, STIE Perbanas in Jakarta, State University of Jakarta and State University of Semarang, will register their students for the championships," said Undip tennis patron Mudiantono on Thursday.

The championships will feature only men's singles, doubles and team events. Undip will likely field male students who have risen to the national player level, such as Yusmawan Fahmi, Prima Simpatiaji, Ferza Gautama, Cuk Prihatmanto and Benny Siswanto.

"We aim to be the champion in this event for the prestige. We'll benefit from hosting the matches," Mudianto said.

UNS will hold the Karate Championships for Students across Java and Bali from March 23 to March 24 at UNS sports hall in Kentingan, Surakarta.

The championships will feature 14 events and offer the Minister of National Education trophy, the UNS rector trophy, the Central Java Governor trophy and Diponegoro Military Commander trophy. The organizer is also providing prize money.(har)
