Unconcerned leaders

After about two weeks of mystery, four missing activists have returned home safely. So far, there is no confirmation from the authorities on whether they were kidnapped or whether they simply disappeared without letting anyone know of their whereabouts.

Both are not my concern.

My concern is how this country values the souls of its citizens. While the four men were missing there was not one word of sympathy from our so-called leaders, the president and vice president, ministers and the people who claim themselves to be our representatives. And when they were returned there were no words of welcome for them. We should all be ashamed that our leaders don't care about the fate of their people.

The releases of the Jolo hostages were welcomed with relief by French President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. The latter said his government would not rest until all French citizens were safe.

In his statement to welcome the German hostages, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said he was delighted the hostages were free and was concerned about the hostages who still remained in captivity.
