Ultimatum for errant policemen

SORONG, Irian Jaya: Police Precinct Chief Lt. Col. Sugiyono has threatened to take strict measures against "delinquent" subordinates.

"Don't ever do anything that could create unrest among people, or damage the police's image. You will not be pardoned for that," Sugiyono said to 385 police officers who will be involved in securing the general election.

Police officers must be tough in all conditions, he said.

"Don't ask people for services. You serve the public. I don't want to hear that you've making trouble," he said.

According to Antara, the 385 officers will be in charge of securing the election on May 29. Many of the officers have to go by boat to reach the polling stations located in remote areas. (sur)
