Ulema blames migrants for vice

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Vice is spreading in Aceh and tainting the image of the province known as "Terrace of Mecca", a leading ulema said Saturday.

Ali Hasjmy, the chairman of the local chapter of the Indonesian Ulemas Council, blamed migrants for the spread of alcoholism, prostitution, gambling, murder and other types of crime.

He said many of the council's guest from other parts of Indonesia or from abroad said they had the impression that vice was spreading in Aceh.

Some star-rated hotels are believed to be used for prostitution and drinking, Antara said.

Besides the influence of migrants and visitors, Ali also blamed poor parental guidance for the spread of vice. (09)
