UKSW rector not dismissed

The article entitled Satya Wacana rocked by more feuding, which appeared on page 2 of the Dec. 2, 1994, issue of The Jakarta Post, stated that "The protests led to the dismissal of rector John JOI Ihalauw and a revamping of the foundation's executive board." This statement is entirely erroneous, and we would like to request an immediate correction.

First, Rector John JOI Ihalauw never stepped down and was certainly never dismissed. The Board of Trustees, which is granted the authority to hire and fire employees at the university, has always given him their full support.

Second, the protests did not lead to a revamping of the foundation's executive board, and the election of new board officers was in no way related to recent protests on the campus. Board members had completed their 1989-1994 terms of office as of Nov. 30, 1994. In line with the constitution governing Satya Wacana Christian University, new board members were elected by the university's founding and supporting churches at that time.

We hope the above explanations will clear up the confusion and misunderstandings on the part of your readers that may have occurred as a result of The Jakarta Post's recent article.
