UI wins contest on mock criminal trial

JAKARTA (JP): A team from the University of Indonesia (UI) won on Friday a mock criminal trial contest held by the School of Law of the Atma Jaya Catholic University.

The UI team defeated four other teams from the Universities of Trisakti, Pancasila, Tarumanagara and Atma Jaya.

The event organizer, Antonius P.S. Wibowo, told The Jakarta Post that each contestant was given one hour to present a mock criminal court proceeding, from the opening of the hearing until the judges' verdict.

Antonius said teams chose one of two established trial cases, either a psychotropic drug case or a counterfeit money case.

Tarumanagara University, Pancasila University and Trisakti University chose to present the psychotropic case trial, while UI and Atma Jaya picked the counterfeit money trial.

The jurists for the contest included Moerino, a justice of the Supreme Court, Tobina Lan Siahaan from the Attorney General's Office and Said Damanik, a lawyer.

Antonius said the committee initially planned to invite at least 20 contestants, but due to limited funds, they could only afford five teams.

As the winner, UI took home the Minister of Justice trophy, while runner-up Atma Jaya University, got the rector's trophy and third runner-up, Tarumanagara University, received the trophy of the Atma Jaya University's dean of School of Law.

Besides trophies, all winners also received certificates for their participation in the contest. (01)
