UI stages Festival of Latin Cultures

DEPOK: The University of Indonesia's French Department Students Association (IKABSIS) has organized the Festival of Roman Cultures with the assistance of the nine embassies of France, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Switzerland, Brazil and Cuba.

Head of the organizing committee Timur Bawono said that the festival was aimed at introducing art and culture from different countries.

The five-day festival -- staged at the auditorium of the Japanese Study Center at the university's compound in Depok -- was opened on Monday with a Spanish Flamenco dance performance.

Other performances included Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art; dramas by Les Retrouvailles, the department's theatrical group and Italian songs performed by the Italian class.

The festival will also feature movies including La Stanza del Figlio and Malena from Italy, Taxi 3 and Amelie from France, Por Si No Te Vuelvo A Ver from Mexico and Abril Despedacado of Brazil.

Other activities during the festival include a Salsa workshop, cooking demonstrations and a bazaar. -- JP
