UI engineering school excels on many fronts
JAKARTA (JP): Rector of the University of Indonesia (UI) M.K. Tadjudin yesterday said the university's school of engineering has many advantages over other engineering schools because it is supported by a wide variety of science fields.
The rector was speaking at a seminar which discussed infrastructure in urban housing and industrial estates. The seminar was held to celebrate the school's 30th anniversary.
Tadjudin's statement was supported by Todung Barita, the dean of the school, who said that UI's other schools, mainly the economics and social affairs schools, are beneficial to the operation of the engineering school.
"Technical matters are connected with other principles, such as those dealing with economic and social affairs," Todung was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.
He also said another advantage of the engineering school is that it is located in the capital, the center of bureaucracy, business and industry.
The UI engineering school was established on Nov. 27, 1964, and so far has produced around 4,600 graduates.
"Not a single graduate of this school has had any difficulty in finding a job," Todung said, adding that lots of companies, both private and state-owned, frequently call at the university to find the best human resources for their offices.
"They even started to recruit students who had not yet finished their studies," Todung said.
The average grade point of an UI engineering school graduate is 2.75 on a scale of 4.0.
The climax of its 30th anniversary celebration will be on Saturday night, when the school will give special awards to dignitaries who helped establish the school, including the late Prof. Sutami and Prof. Rooseno.(mas)
