UI asks public inputs for rectorial election

JAKARTA: The University of Indonesia (UI) is seeking inputs from the public about its candidates in the rectorial election, an official said on Tuesday.

"We will place an advertisement in several newspapers to solicit inputs from the public about the candidates," said Evi Fitriani, a member of staff at the university's public relations division.

The inputs, Evi said, would be used by the UI representatives' council or Majelis Wali Amanah (MWA), which consists of the university's stakeholders including the Ministry of Education to screen the current seven candidates.

Evi said the council would carry out the fit and proper test for the candidates on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4.

"On Aug. 6, MWA will select four candidates from among the seven, and on Aug. 8 the candidates will hold a public debate," she said.

MWA will then select two of the four candidates on Aug. 13 before it finally names the UI rector for the 2002-2007 term on Aug. 16, she added.

There were initially 14 candidates, but after the first screening, the number was cut to seven.

They are Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, head of the criminal department, School of Law; Jimly Assidiqie, professor of state administrative law; Budi Soesilo Supanji, dean, School of Engineering; Usman Chatib Warsa, UI acting rector and professor of medicine; Noekman Moeloek, lecturer, School of Medicine; Martani Huseini, dean, School of Social and Political Science and Djoko Hartanto, lecturer, School of Engineering.--JP
