UGM launches new nurse training unit

YOGYAKARTA: In cooperation with PT Roll Internusa Mandiri (RIM), the Nursing Science Study Program of Gajah Mada University's School of Medicine launched here on Thursday the Professional Nurse Training Unit.

Head of the study program Sunartini said the establishment of the unit was mainly inspired by the high demand of skilled nurses in the world and the large number of partially trained nurses in this country.

"Through the unit, UGM and PT RIM will increase the skill quality of Indonesian nurses to international standards," pediatrician Sunartini said.

To provide Indonesian nurses with the international standard of a professional nursing skills, the unit is developing a pre- selection preparation program using the TOEFL test for English fluency and the NCLEC test for nursing competence.

The university is also planning to build a small hospital this year to support the teaching and learning process at the newly established unit.

The school hopes to produce professional nurses of international standard as well as make the university the educational and training center for nurses. -- JP
