U-12 heat involves 4,300 players

JAKARTA: Around 400 teams with 4,300 players of under 12 years
old will be involved in the qualifying stage of the Danone
Nations Cup, the organizing committee confirmed here on Thursday.

The qualifying matches will be held in 12 towns and cities
from March 22 to April 13. The qualifying venues include Jakarta,
Bogor, Bandung, Medan, Padang, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Surabaya,
Denpasar, Malang, Makassar and Banjarmasin.

The 12 winning teams will qualify for the finals to be held in
Jakarta on 18-19 April.

The champion will represent Indonesia at the international
Danone U-12 soccer festival in Paris early June where it joins
other 31 teams from the world. --JP

C. Java leads in archery meet

JAKARTA: Central Java won seven of the 10 gold medals on offer
in the traditional events to go on top of the National Archery
Championship here on Thursday.

The Central Javanese have collected eight golds to leave their
rival East Kalimantan, which dominated the FITA round competition
on the opening day, in a distant second-place with five. Central
kalimantan remains in third place with three.

The traditional event, which is classified into men's and
women's 50 meter, 40 meter and 30 meter, is played with the
archers being seated while aiming at the target.

The other three golds went to South Kalimantan (2) and West
Java (1). The archers will round off their participation with

War on Iraq won't stop cricket final

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket's World Cup final will go ahead as
planned here on Sunday despite the opening of hostilities in
Iraq, a tournament spokesman told AFP on Thursday.

However, the match will take place against a background of
heightened security with more police on duty at the game which
takes place at the Wanderers ground here.

"Everything is on track and the final goes ahead as planned,"
said Rodney Hartman, the World Cup organising committe's
communications director.

"There are no plans to change the schedule but the match will

Jones looks to fight Holyfield next

NEW YORK: Roy Jones said former world champion Evander
Holyfield is likely to be his first opponent in defense of the
heavyweight title, but added that Mike Tyson remains a big-paying
possibility.

Jones defeated John Ruiz by unanimous decision on March 1 to
capture the World Boxing Association title that Ruiz had taken
from Holyfield in 2001.

Now Jones, the first former middleweight champion to claim the
heavyweight crown in more than a century, said he plans to
surrender his undisputed world light heavyweight title and give
Holyfield a bout to regain part of the crown. --AFP
