Two-year-old murder solved

Police said yesterday that they have arrested a man believed to have killed a resident of Cipinang Melayu, East Jakarta, two years ago.

The suspect, Daniel Gonta alias Deni, who is being charged for the murder of a new mother, was caught on Friday at his parents' house which is located just 100 meters from the victim's residence.

Police said the 28-year old suspect allegedly killed Mrs Tumilah at her home on Oct. 14, 1992, just 40 days after she gave birth to a healthy baby.

According to Col. Gories Mere, chief of general crimes at the City Police, the murder was committed by Deni and an accomplice by the name of Edi, who is still at large.

At the time of the murder the suspect decided to rob the Tumilah's house while the victim's husband, Ngatijo, was at work by sneaking into Tumilah's house but was discovered by the woman who had just taken a shower..

Ngatijo is a civil servant working for the municipal authority.

Edi quickly grabbed the unfortunate woman and gagged her but his attempt failed when Tumilah bit his hand.

Panicking, Deni quickly grabbed a 50-centimeter knife in the kitchen and struck Tumilah in the neck.

They then wrapped her body in a mat and also tried to choke the new born baby because it began to raise such a commotion.

"However the child survived and is now already two years old," Gories said.

Deni and Edi then proceeded to ransack the desk taking a television set, and a necklace. However they were seen by another neighbor as they left the deceased's house.

Deni then went to his hometown in Jombang, East Java, where he hid for two years before returning to his parents house in Cipinang Melayu, East Jakarta, where he was caught a few days ago. (jsk/mds)
