Two world-class performers to stage concerts here

Two internationally acclaimed performers steeped in classical music are expected to stage performances simultaneously at two different venues here this weekend.

Tickets have been reported as selling fast, so concertgoers without tickets may need to rely on last-minute no-shows.

At 8 p.m. on Sunday evening, Uruguayan-born Canadian guitarist Alvaro Pieri will play the Goethe Haus, South Jakarta, and Italian maverick Patrizio Buanne will perform at the newly opened Balai Kartini, Central Jakarta.

Pieri will perform in a concert titled "the Guitar Maestros concert series", a program that will span a period of four months.

Scores of world-class guitarists are expected to turn in a performance in future concerts in the program.

Pieri has performed extensively throughout Europe, North and South America and Asia and won the bulk of prestigious awards such as the first prize at the Buenos Aires International Guitar Competition and gold medal at the 18th Paris International Guitar Competition, Radio France.

Buanne, a 26-year-old singer, is a rising star in the world of classical music and has been hailed by music critics in England as the new big thing.

His debut album, The Italian, on Universal Music, was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the former Beatles Abbey Road studios, and was said to be a sophisticated album that conjures up images of classic American and Italian singers of the 1950s and 1960s.

He was signed by Universal only after a bidding war between major labels in the United Kingdom. -- JP
