Two thieves shot dead

JAKARTA (JP): Police shot dead yesterday two men who were members of a five-man gang believed to have stolen jewelry and Rp 5 million in cash from a resident of Cikorongo, Bekasi, West Java.

City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said the police were forced to shoot the two men when they resisted arrest.

"We also apprehended the other three," he said.

The three were identified as Andi, Andrew and Gadar, while the two killed were Ata and Otoy.

Iman said the five men broke into the house of Encep Yusup, 55, overpowered him and his other family members before helping themselves to 123 grams of jewelry and Rp 5 million in cash.

He said Andrew and Gadar were apprehended not far from the house, while Andi, Ata and Otoy were picked up on Jl. Bumi Asih in the Cikoneng subdistrict. (jun/bas)
