Two suspected robbers shot dead

JAKARTA: Two suspected robbers were shot dead on Jl. Pangeran Jayakarta, Central Jakarta, and in Tambora, West Jakarta, respectively on Monday.

One robber man was killed by a police officer at 9:30 p.m. after he and a friend allegedly tried to rob a bajaj (three-wheel motorized pedicab) passenger's cellphone. The bajaj was turning off Jl. Gunung Sahari when both robbers threatened the passenger with a knife.

The police officer fired a warning shot but the two attempted to flee, forcing the officer to shoot one of them.

Earlier on the same day, two people had threatened Budi Mulyani, 25, at the Bandengan railway in Tambora at 4 p.m.

Budi shouted for help and was heard by a community police officer, Chief Brig. Hartono, who quickly fired a warning shot.

The two robbers snatched Rp 325,000 (US$31), with the dead robber's accomplice apparently managing to escape with the money.-- JP
