Two shot dead in drug arrest

JAKARTA: The police shot and killed on Monday two men suspected of drug trafficking, confiscating one kilogram of shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) from the suspects, a police officer said on Tuesday.

Bekasi Police detectives chief Adj. Comr. Didik Sukadi said that both suspects were shot when they tried to escape police arrest.

The suspects, Rafel, 31, and Naim, 40, were arrested following an exchange of gunfire between police and seven suspects who were driving a public minivan, Didik said in a statement.

The other five, were identified as Awai, Patilima, Oceng, Yacub and Gustaf, escaped after the shootout.

While directing police to the other suspects in Cilincing, North Jakarta, Naim tried to grab a rifle from an officer, but was shot dead during the commotion.

Rafel took advantage of the confusion and attempted an escape but, after firing three warning shots, police shot him in the leg. He died on the way to Kramat Jati hospital.--JP
