Two Malaysians tried in logging case

JAYAPURA, Papua: The trial of two Malaysians for their alleged involvement in illegal logging in the nation's easternmost province began here on Thursday.

If they are found guilty, they could face 10 years' imprisonment said a prosecutor at Jayapura district court.

The two are Freddy Tang, the general manager of PT Wapoga Mutiara Industri Biak and Tan Eng Kwee, the general manager of PT Wapoga Mutiara Timber Unit II.

The two have been accused of buying illegally felled logs for their timber companies. Previously, several other Malaysian businessmen were put on trial in similar cases. -- JP
