Two killed in Surabaya accident

SURABAYA: A four-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy died instantly when a speeding truck hit a group of five pedestrians who were crossing Jl. Demak here on Tuesday.

The three others suffered serious injuries and were taken to Dr. Sutomo General Hospital.

The relationship of the five victims remains unknown, but Antara new agency reported all of the victims lived at the same address on Jl. Salatiga in Surabaya.

The dead victims were identified as Putri Retnosari and Indra. The injured were identified as two-year-old Fenny Anggraini, Sunarti, 20, and Siti Asiah, 24.

An eyewitness, Supriyono, said the accident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. as the five crossed the street.

The driver of the truck, Rachmat, 30, is being held by North Surabaya Police for questioning, Sgt. Maj. Sukardi said. (bsr)
