Two Kazakh women arrested

JAKARTA: Two Kazakh women were arrested after they were caught preparing to smoke marijuana in front of the Jakarta Theater on Jl. Wahid Hasyim, Central Jakarta, on Monday at around 7 p.m.

The two -- identified only as Irene, 24, and Elena, 21 -- were captured by security guards with three small packages of marijuana.

They were taken to police for further interrogation. They carried no passports when detained.

"I don't know that marijuana is forbidden by the law here. In my country, we are allowed to use it for personal use," Elena told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Both Elena and Irene have been staying in Jakarta for two months for holiday. They are staying at the Pecenongan Hotel in Central Jakarta.

Elena claimed that she was a college teacher while Irene was a university student in their country. -- JP
