Two criminals mobbed

JAKARTA (JP): Two criminals, who failed to steal valuables from two houses in Central Jakarta and Tangerang, were mobbed by local residents in separate incidents yesterday.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said Susanto, 41, and his two accomplices arrived in a Kijang van at Lo Siat Jin's house on Jl. Kalibaru Timur, in Senen, Central Jakarta, early in the morning.

"The suspects entered the house and cut a telephone wire before they tied the house owner up with a cable," Aritonang said.

Lo, 45, shouted for help after she managed to loosen her bindings, he said.

He said after hearing Lo, nearby residents surrounded the house and mobbed Susanto, but failed to catch his two accomplices, who escaped in the van.

The suspect, who suffered severe injuries, was rushed to Kramatjati Police Hospital in East Jakarta.

Meanwhile, another man, named Hariyati, was mobbed by residents after he tried to break into a house on Jl. F4 at the STIE Perbanas housing complex, in Ciputat, Tangerang, yesterday.

Aritonang said Hariyadi and his accomplice drove a motorcycle to the house and tried to break the window.

He said the house owner, Arda Lubis, phoned neighbors for help as soon as he saw Hariyadi trying to enter the house.

Residents caught and mobbed Hariyadi but failed to capture the other suspect, he said.

Police then brought Hariyadi, who also suffered severe injuries, to Kramatjati Police Hospital, he said. (jun/cst)
