Two condo project workers plummet to their deaths

JAKARTA (JP): Two workers have fallen to their deaths in North and East Jakarta over the last three days.

Madekan, 40, died after falling from the 14th floor to the 13th floor in a condominium project in Ancol in North Jakarta early yesterday, while Nana Rohana, 24, died after falling 11 meters in West Cakung in East Jakarta.

The two were sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta for postmortem examinations.

Madekan, who hailed from Jepara in Central Java, died of severe head wounds, said a fellow worker, Samiran.

Madekan, who started working for PT Sangiyong last Wednesday, was seen pushing a wheelbarrow of concrete to the edge of the 14th floor of the building at about 2 a.m.

"After that I don't know what happened as I was on the first floor painting inside," Samiran said.

However, Samiran said he heard a big bump and screams which also alerted other workers.

"When we got there, Madekan was facedown on the floor of the 13th floor and had stopped breathing," Samiran said.

Madekan and 10 other workers were on the 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. shift at the 25-story Oceania Condominium project in Ancol.

The body of Madekan, father of four, was claimed by fellow workers and transported to Jepara.

Nana Rohana, who was employed by PT Kabel Metal Indonesia, fell from the top of a 11-meter high building and died of head injuries.

According to a coworker, Selamet, 32, Nana was on the roof of the factory's warehouse from where he was going to repair a drain pipe.

"He suddenly fell when he stepped on a cracked roof tile," he said.

Nana was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, he said.

Selamet said that Nana, who hailed from Cirebon, West Java, had worked for the company for almost three years.

He said Nana had planned to marry on April 3.

Nana's father, relatives and fiancee gathered at the hospital Thursday to mourn his death.

His fiancee, 18-year-old Asmah, wailed incessantly while being embraced by her parents. Nana's father also held Asmah, while his eyes brimmed with tears.

A relative said Nana's father had been saving money for his son's wedding and Asmah had sent out the wedding invitations.

"But who could foretell Nana's destiny?" he asked.

Nana's body was buried at Sindang Laut in Cirebon Thursday. (09/emf)
