Two children die in fire

DEPOK: Two children were killed and their mother was severely burned when a fire broke out at their house on Sunday in Parung Poncol, Duren Mekar subdistrict, Sawangan district, Depok.

Fais, 4, and Amelia, 5, were playing cat-and-mouse in the 18- square-meter rented house when one of them accidentally knocked over a jerrican of fuel that their father, Ahmad Ghozi, had placed inside. The fuel spread throughout the kitchen where their mother Wiwin was cooking on a kerosene stove and caught on fire, engulfing all three.

Neighbors rushed to the burning house to help the three, and were able to extinguish the fire because of the heavy rains that day.

All three had suffered serious burns and Amelia died at the scene, while Fais died on the way to Fatmawati Hospital, South Jakarta. Wiwin has been admitted to intensive care.

Ghozi was not in the house when the incident occurred.
