Two bomb threats scare Surabayans

SURABAYA: While police are still searching for those responsible for Tuesday's bomb, which killed a housewife on Jl. Kedung Sroko, Surabaya, two further bomb threats were made in the city on Wednesday.

Police said that an unidentified caller threatened to blast the building of PT Safari Megah, a dealer of Hyundai automobiles on Jl. Ahmad Yani at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday.

The second bomb threat was received by Dr. Sutomo General Hospital in Karangmenjangan at 11:15 a.m. on the same day. But police found no bombs at either of the two locations.

After two hours combing both areas the city's bomb squad found nothing.

Surabaya Police chief Sr. Comr. Itho Sumardi told reporters that people should remain calm despite the bomb threats.

Speaking about Tuesday's explosion, which killed Nailul Aliyati, a mother of two children, Itho said that police had questioned 26 witnesses, including the victim's husband, Setyo Pinardi.

He said that there had been no clues that could lead to the suspects.

Police had to reevaluate and reexamine their findings at the location, including the public transport minivan serving the Jembatan Merah - Keputih route, which was reportedly used by the man who threw the bomb at Aliyati's residence. Itho said. (nur)
