Two arrested over riot

UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Two men are currently under military detention for their role in last week's massive students' riots over bus fare hikes.

Brig. Gen. Fachrul Razi, the chief of staff at the Wirabuana Military Command, said one man was arrested for carrying a knife while another was caught setting fire to a car, Antara reported.

The military said three youths were killed when troops forced the protesting students back into the campus of the Indonesian Moslem University. They died after falling into a river, the military said, denying suggestions that they were shot or tortured by soldiers.

The protests forced the Ujungpandang authorities to revoke the decision to raise public transport fares in the city. (rms)
